Dynamic Bone Health Classes
Good bone density is important as our skeletal system provides our body shape, allows movement, protects our organs, makes blood cells and stores minerals. Poor bone density results in changes to the structure of the bones which, if left untreated, can result in osteopenia or osteoporosis.
In Australia 1:5 women and 1:20 men over 50 years of age are directly or indirectly affected by osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is often undetected until a low impact or non-traumatic fracture occurs, resulting in a loss of independence and reliance upon family, friends or carers. There is often associated loss of physical function resulting in inability to work, reduced participation in activities and hobbies including inability to independently access the local community.
Bone mineral density is amassed from our early teens to our mid to late 20’s, peaking in our late 20’s.
Factors that contribute to bone growth are:
Enhancing factors
Youth
Early mobility
Adequate blood supply
Good nutrition
Adequate hormones
Inhibiting factors
Older age
Extensive tissue damage
Bone loss due to severity of fracture
Inadequate mobility
Infection
Poor blood supply
Inadequate hormones
Poor nutrition
Excessive alcohol intake
Some Long-term medication use
Prevention of low bone density is optimal, but should you be identified as at risk or diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis, we can help you build your bones with our small group individualised exercise classes.
The classes are aimed to specifically target bone growth, with participants performing an initial assessment for ability and skill.
This will form the basis of their 10-week program, written and led by one of our skilled physiotherapists, who have exercise backgrounds.
Classes will have a strong focus on weight bearing activities including progressive strength exercise which will help to improve:
Bone density
Muscle mass
Balance
Posture
Confidence
Energy levels
Risk of fracturs from falls
